Ørsted has appointed energy and marine consultancy, ABL, to provide marine warranty survey services (MWS) for the offshore transportation and installation (T&I) of wind turbines and cables package for the 920 MW Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms in Taiwan.

ABL’s scope of work includes reviewing, surveying, and approving all operations relating to the transportation and installation of all wind turbines and subsea cabling.

This latest award follows the company’s MWS appointment on the 900 MW Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms. ABL completed the service in 2022.

The Greater Changhua 2b and 4 projects will include the installation of 66 fixed-bottom wind turbines in water depths between 23.8 and 44.1 metres.

Located 35-60 kilometres off the coast of Changhua County, the offshore wind farms entered the construction stage in March 2023 after Ørsted took the final investment decision on the 920 MW projects.

The inter-array cables will be provided by the Netherlands-based Twentsche KabelFabriek (TKF) while LS Cable & System will supply subsea cables for Greater Changhua 2b and 4.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

In 2018, Ørsted secured 920 MW of grid capacity for the offshore wind farms in Taiwan’s first competitive price-based auction with no mandatory local content requirements. Two years later, the developer signed a corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) for the offtake of the full production from Changhua 2b and 4.

Ørsted also owns and operates the 900 MW Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind project, which was officially inaugurated last month at an event in the Port of Taichung, Taiwan.
