SMC Lands Seagreen Balance of Plant Contract
Specialist Marine Consultants (SMC) have been awarded a contract to provide Seagreen Wind Energy Limited with holistic Balance of Plant (BoP) services to support multiple activities during the construction phase of the 1.1 GW Seagreen wind farm offshore Scotland.
The scope of services encompasses a comprehensive multi-scope package of resources, including a range of inspection, maintenance, and repair services, SMC said.
The BoP contract follows a turnkey Marine Coordination contract that SMC was awarded in April 2021 to support construction and commissioning operations across the Seagreen offshore wind farm.
21 out of the 114 Vestas V164-10.0 MW wind turbines were installed by April 2022 at the offshore wind farm while the first turbine was installed in early December last year.
This marked the first time a wind turbine with a double-digit megawatt capacity was installed offshore Europe.
Scotland’s largest and the world’s deepest fixed-bottom offshore wind farm is a joint venture between SSE Renewables (49 per cent) and TotalEnergies (51 per cent).
Seagreen offshore wind farm is located approximately 17.5 nautical miles (about 32 kilometres) southeast of the Port of Montrose, where the project’s Marine Coordination Centre (MMC) is located for both construction and operations and maintenance (O&M).
SSE Renewables is leading the development and construction of the Seagreen project, supported by TotalEnergies, and will operate Seagreen on completion for its expected 25-year lifetime.
The first power is expected by early next year with the offshore wind farm expected to enter commercial operation in 2023.
SSE and SMC are already cooperating on the 3.6 GW Dogger Bank offshore wind farm where SMC is also supporting the project with marine coordination services.
