Energinet.dk Awards Kriegers Flak Onshore Cabling Contracts

Energinet.dk is in the process of sourcing the major technical components that are to be used for the grid connection of the future offshore wind farm at Kriegers Flak and has recently purchased the cables that are to connect the offshore wind turbines to the power grid on Zealand, Denmark.

Contracts have been signed for a total of 200 km of cable. Besides the contract with ABB for the delivery of approximately 100 km of 220 kV submarine cables, two contracts have been awarded for cable systems on land. The Korean company LS Cable and System delivers the approximately 95 km of 220 kV cable which is to be used to connect the offshore wind turbines to two different substations; the Bjæverskov substation and the Ishøj substation.

The French company Nexans will deliver just under 20 km of 400 kV cable, which is to be used to reinforce the power grid between the Ishøj substation and the Hovegaard substation near Ballerup.

“The land cable contracts are flexible, allowing us to adjust the cable lengths when the work of determining the exact location of the cables starts next spring. The work takes place in cooperation with the owners of the land where the land cables will be placed,” says Jens Christian Hygebjerg, project manager, Energinet.dk .

The grid connection also comprises extensions of several onshore substations and two offshore substation platforms. These plants and components will be put to tender by Energinet.dk later in 2015.

The three cable contracts amount to some DKK 800 million – approximately a quarter of the total construction project of DKK 3.5 billion.

The cable laying will begin in autumn 2016. In December 2014, the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Building approved Energinet.dk’s investments in the grid connection, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2018.
