Westermost Rough offshore wind farm produced its first electricity last week, according to Grimsby Telegraph.

The wind farm, located eight kilometers off the Yorkshire Coast, is the first to feature Siemens’ 6 MW turbines in the UK.

With a total capacity of 210MW it will be able to provide enough electricity to power around 200,000 homes.

“The process has gone extremely well. We’re lucky to have a great team of people on Westermost Rough and the energisation process up to first power has taken a huge effort from the entire onshore substation team, the offshore construction site team, our contractors and all who support us. Our team of commissioning personnel have been tireless and dedicated throughout to ensure the process went smoothly,” said Sam Hall, lead commissioning manager for Westermost Rough.

He concluded by saying: “Over the coming weeks the first turbines will be generating clean, green electricity and then supplying it to the UK grid which is a great milestone to be able to report.”

The first wind farm was erected last month by A2SEA’s jack-up vessel Challenger.

Westermost Rough is expected to be completed in the first half of 2015.
