CWE Ireland has applied with the Department of the Environment for the licence to develop a five megawatt wave energy project off the west Clare coast, writes the Irish Times.

The company, which is a 100% owned subsidiary of Carnegie Wave Energy Limited, chose this site after a two year research.

Kieran O’Brien of CWE Ireland said that the wave potential off Co Clare was “one of the best in the world”, and that the company was hoping to start the test work next spring.

The application also states that the wave project will have no effect on the water sport activities or the fishing in that area.
