The University of Hull’s Department of Geography will start the UK’s first masters degree programme in September, as the This is Scunthorpe news portal reports. It will prepare students for the onshore and offshore wind, wave and tidal power sectors and teach them how to run operational wind and tidal stream power installations based on web and database technologies used in the industry.
Supported by the Centre for Adaptive Science and Sustainability (Cass), the MSc Environmental Technology Renewable Energy is focused on skills in project management that are relevant to the renewable energy industry. Course requirement is a minimum of a second class degree in Geography or related discipline.
The aims of the programme are to identify key scientific and technical principles underlying renewable energy resource development. Students will be trained to become environmental technologists and managers who will work in industry, consultancy, government, academia or NGOs, both nationally and internationally.
The programme will provide knowledge and understanding of contemporary policy and practices of renewable energy, as well as in depth knowledge and array of practical skills within the student’s chosen specialism, gained through industry placements with integrated dissertation projects.
Professor Stephanie Haywood , director of Cass , said: “This new programme will fill a niche in providing skills that are vital to the development of the region’s renewable energy sector and the Humber ports, as well as benefiting industry nationally and internationally.”
