Sollatek to Keep Beatrice Onshore Substation Steady

Siemens has selected Sollatek to provide stabilisers for the Beatrice offshore wind farm’s onshore substation.

When fully commissioned and at a cost of over GBP 2.6 billion, the 588MW Beatrice will be Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm.

Located more than 13km from the mainland, the Beatrice wind turbines deliver power to the onshore substation where it’s regulated and ‘cleaned’ for export to the electricity grid network. While this electricity is being ‘cleaned’, the Sollatek LVAC AVR ensures a regulated supply is provided for site control and maintenance equipment for the onshore substation.

The variation of switching activities that would be performed at the site could cause the auxiliary supply to vary beyond the standard workable limits. Sollatek designed and manufactured an 828kVA regulator with an input tolerance of -34% to +19% (151V – 274V) of the nominal, making this one of the largest ranges for any solid state, thyristor based regulators.

Siemens signed a contract to supply, install and commission 84 7MW wind turbines, and provide grid access solution for the wind farm.
