Giant Turbine Rises in Aberdeen Bay (Timelapse)

Vattenfall is currently installing eleven MHI Vestas wind turbines on the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC) in the Aberdeen Bay, including the two of the most powerful wind turbines in the world.

The 93.2MW demonstration wind farm will comprise nine MHI Vestas 8.4MW turbines and two MHI Vestas turbines with a record-breaking capacity of 8.8MW, the first of which was installed in early April.

The video below shows the installation of one of the eleven turbines onto a suction bucket foundation by Swire Blue Ocean’s vessel, the Pacific Orca.

MHI Vestas has specially designed the V164-8.4 MW and V164-8.8 MW turbines which all have a tip height of 191 metres. Each blade is 80m long – slightly taller than Aberdeen’s Marischal College – and the 164m rotor has a circumference larger than that of the London Eye’s.

The EOWDC project is the first to pair suction bucket jacket foundations with the most powerful wind turbines in the market at commercial scale.
