Dolwin Beta’s Living Quarters in Place (UAE)

Dolwin Beta's Living Quarters in Place (UAE)

The Dolwin Beta wind platform is well under construction at subcontractor Drydocks World in Dubai, as the 500-ton living quarters were lifted in place by a floating crane.

The placing of the living quarters marks a milestone in the project, which is a collaboration between Aibel and ABB. Dolwin Beta’s height (77 meters) made the installation of the living quarters one of the most complex operations in the project.

“The hoist was carried out in a good and safe manner. We are very satisfied,” says Project Manager Kjetil V. Jacobsen. “Now, work will start on welding the living quarters to the platform deck.” he added.

Preparations for the operation were thorough. A trial lift was carried out the day before to ensure that the installation would proceed as smoothly as possible. It took five and a half hours until the new module was installed.

When the platform is completed, it will be installed in a major wind park in the German sector in the North Sea. There it will convert alternating current from wind turbines to direct current before sending it onshore.
