For this project, Van Oord deployed its 8,000-tonne heavy lift installation vessel Svanen to install 56 monopile foundations. The remaining 31 foundations, together with the transition pieces, were installed by Aeolus. This was the first floating installation of transition pieces for Aeolus.

The Walney Extension wind farm is located in the Irish Sea, some 19 kilometres off Walney Island, Cumbria, UK. It consists of 87 turbines with a total capacity of 659MW.

Once fully commissioned in 2019, Walney Extension will become the world’s largest operating offshore wind farm.
