Each of the five spar-type floating foundations will be made of five blocks, and Navantia currently has around 15 blocks in different fabrication stage, with the first spar scheduled to be ready in March 2017.

The launching weight of the floating foundations is around 3,200t, including more than 1,000t of high density concrete.

The contract for fabrication of the foundations was awarded to the Navantia-Windar joint venture by Statoil’s subsidiary Hywind Scotland Ltd. in June 2015.

The foundations will house five Siemens SWT-6.0-154 direct drive offshore wind turbines and, once built, the Hywind Scotland project will be the world’s largest floating offshore wind farm.
