German State Charts Out Offshore Wind Territory

The Cabinet of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has adopted a new spatial development programme (LEP) which identifies 185 square kilometres suitable for development of offshore wind farms off the German northern state’s Baltic coast.

13 square kilometres out of the total area identified as suitable for offshore wind projects is reserved for demonstration and test sites only.

The demonstration sites are expected to attract offshore wind technology developers to the region which could potentially open up new markets to local businesses.

The first draft of the programme identified a 580 square kilometre area off Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s coast as suitable for offshore wind farms.

However, a number of suggestions and objections relating to the impact of the offshore wind projects on local navigation and environment has led to the area being reduced to the recently approved level.
