BOEM OKs Dong Energy’s U.S. Offshore Wind Lease

On June 12, the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has approved DONG Energy’s takeover of the 1 GW offshore wind lease off Massachusetts from RES Americas Developments Inc.

The Massachusetts lease has a total size of 760 square kilometres, is located approximately 90 kilometres from shore with water depth between 40-50 metres.

RES secured the rights to develop the area at an offshore wind auctionheld by the BOEM on January 29, 2015. The company will continue to contribute to the development of the project in agreement with DONG Energy, the new lease owner said.

By joining the US offshore wind market, DONG Energy engages in projects outside Europe for the first time.

“The site conditions are quite similar to those we currently work with in North-Western Europe which means that the project could be developed using well-known technology and logistics,” said Samuel Leupold, Executive Vice President of DONG Energy Wind Power.
