Dong Prefers MHI Vestas for Borkum Riffgrund 2

DONG Energy has selected MHI Vestas Offshore Wind as preferred supplier for the proposed delivery of the V164-8.0MW wind turbine for the Borkum Riffgrund 2 Offshore Wind Farm in Germany.

Borkum Riffgrund 2 with an awarded grid capacity of 450MW is located in the North Sea, approximately 57km off the north-west coast of Germany and is able to cover the consumption of 460,000 German households.

Samuel Leupold, Executive Vice President for DONG Energy Wind Power, said: “The performance of the 8MW turbine from MHI Vestas Offshore Wind is decisive for us selecting it as the preferred turbine for the Borkum Riffgrund 2 development project.”

“It’s very satisfying to see the competitive performance level that MHI Vestas has brought into this tender and the offshore wind industry. This is the kind of commitment that reaffirms my belief that the industry is on track, and that DONG Energy is also on track in terms of meeting its cost reduction targets.”

DONG Energy expects to sign an agreement with MHI Vestas Offshore Wind later this year; however, it is conditional upon DONG Energy making final investment decision on the Borkum Riffgrund 2 project.

The Borkum Riffgrund 2 Offshore Wind is located next to the 312MW Borkum Riffgrund 1 Offshore Wind Farm where DONG Energy has just installed the 78th and final wind turbine and expects to enter full commercial operation later this year.

In total, DONG Energy has installed 3,000MW offshore wind turbines which can supply enough electricity to cover the consumption of more than 7 million Europeans. The company has a target of installing a total of 6,500MW by 2020 thus more than doubling the capacity over the next five years compared to what has been installed in the last 15 years.
