Fabrication of Sandbank OWF’s Foundations Starts

Vattenfall and Stadtwerke München (SWM) have announced the start of manufacturing of the components for the Sandbank offshore wind farm. The fabrication of 72 steel monopile foundations for wind turbines has started at EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH in Rostock.

Depending on their location within the wind farm, monopiles will have a diameter of up to 6.80 meters and will be up to 70 meters long, weighing around 886 tons. For the production of all 72 monopiles, around 52,000 tons of steel is needed.

With the manufacturing of the Sandbank foundations, the full-capacity production at EEW SPC will be reached mid-2015. In addition, the fabrication of Sandbank’s offshore transformer station will start soon.

EEW SPC will subcontract Danish company Bladt Industries for the production of transition pieces.

The wind farm will feature 72 Siemens 4 MW wind turbines, installed some 90 km of the isle of Sylt. The construction at sea is scheduled to start in 2015, with operation expected to kick off in 2017.
