Windfarm Update: Burbo Bank Extension

At the end of September developer DONG Energy  received development consent from the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change for the Burbo Bank Extension offshore wind farm for which the company had already been granted the lease agreement by The Crown Estate on 11 May 2010.

Burbo Bank Extension will be located west of the existing Burbo Bank wind farm, in Liverpool Bay, around 7km north of the North Wirral coast near the village of Meols, and covers 40 km2. With up to 250MW it could meet the annual energy needs of more than 170,000 households.

The previous month the company already signed a conditional agreement with MHI Vestas for 32 of their V164-8.0MW turbines, which could be MHI Vestas’ first commercial order for their 8MW turbine. Burbo Bank Extension was one of three Dong Energy’s projects awarded a FID-enabling Contract for Difference in April 2014. DONG Energy still needs to make a final investment decision.
