The company scooped the prestigious Skills Development award in recognition of its efforts in pioneering new offshore emergency response techniques. HSSE has been operating Emergency Response Teams (ERTs) and offshore support across its wind farm projects to provide 24 hour medical and emergency response cover with highly rapid response times as part of their role for providing O&M services for ad-hoc tasks.

HSSE Recognised at Renewable Energy Association Awards (2)The ERT service as part of the Hughes Offshore Support teams has been provided by HSSE since 2012, when the company identified the area of offshore emergency response as one in which significant improvements could be made. To begin addressing the perceived issues in the field, HSSE began to provide three man teams fully qualified in roped-access, confined space and advanced first aid operations – these teams are deployed in the field on rotating shifts to ensure full cover at a moment’s notice. The ERTs facilitate rapid emergency response and are highly mobile on the site, with an average response time of less than 30 minutes for any incident. In addition, the ERTs have been involved in delivering on-site training to other sub-contractors, sharing skills and knowledge that have the potential to save lives in an emergency as part of their daily routine of operations and maintenance infield.

HSSE managing director Ian Hughes passed comment on the win:

“It is our belief that in emergencies, the industry standard ‘golden hour’ should be used as effectively as possible. As a result we are committed to provide rapid response within 30 minutes of any incident. We take great pride in this service and will continue to develop and improve the ERT as the company moves forward”.

Mr Hughes also expressed his thanks to the ERT crews, head office staff and client support, who continue to work diligently to secure the efficiency and logistics of the operation.
