Over 1,000 European cities have written a joint open letter to the European Council president Herman Van Rompuy, calling for a 30% renewable energy target for 2030, alongside a 40% energy efficiency target.

Energy Cities, the alliance representing the 1,000 cities, is hoping the EU Heads of State, who meet on the topic on 20-21 March, will follow the MEPs’ more ambitious lead.

“It is now in the hands of the European Council to send an encouraging signal to investors and among them citizens, communities and local authorities, and confirm the EU’s ambition to take a leading role in international climate talks and programmes,” the joint letter read.
