UK: HiDef Achieves 99 Pct Bird Identification Success

UK HiDef Achieve 99 Pct Bird Identification Success (2)

Following a major investment, HiDef aerial surveying can now provide developers with bird identification rates of up to 99%. Average ID rates across all surveys in past 12 months are over 95%. This success has been achieved through new camera technology and the creation of HiDef’s own in house team of 25 leading UK ornithologists.

Director Mark Robinson outlined the company’s rationale,

“We wanted to meet our clients need for reduced reporting delivery schedules and increased rates of species identification. To do this we needed higher resolution images, and to bring our ID work in house. As our new extreme definition cameras were already coming online, we set about recruiting Britain’s best and the brightest ornithologists.”

HiDef then invested substantially in training the team to work with the company’s specialised imaging software. The result has been a major increase in the speed of data delivery to offshore developers in the UK, Europe and the USA. ID rates have now surpassed those from boat based surveys but delivered at significantly reduced costs.

HiDef Director David Baillie commented on the benefits of the new in house team,

“Our team know that successfully mitigating any effects on marine wildlife ultimately depends on the quality of the survey data. So they have a strong personal motivation for the highest standards of professional accuracy, and this is continually confirmed by our rigourous independent QA.”
